What I learned from taking my own head shots

It has been five years since I graduated high school, and It has taken me this long to gather the courage to get in front of my own camera and get a nice photo of myself. I always hear clients say how hard it was to schedule their session, or how they wanted to cancel last minute because they were too afraid of how they would look. I normally respond with something about how nice they will look and they wont feel the same way after they see the photos, but now I get. it.

As a photographer I happily hide behind my camera and never am in family photos. I often look back at photos of myself before I gained weight and there are so many photos and memories to look at, now there are just a few photos of myself from the past few years, fewer memories documented because I didn't like looking at my picture.

Growing up my mother had the same issue, she would make jokes about not letting anyone take her picture from the neck up and while I rolled my eyes, the older I got the more I found myself saying the same thing.  I started hearing people say to me "wow your headshot doesn't look anything like you" or "how long ago was this photo taken" I knew the time was running out and I couldn't hide behind 16 year old me any more.

Finally, today, I told myself it was now or never. I am out of excuses. I did my own hair and makeup, set up my lights and put on some feel good music. I took hundreds of photos, running to look at the back of the camera and see how I was looking.  Once I found the photo I liked the most, I posted it to my social media and sat back and waited for a response.

I got a ton of positive feedback on the image, and then a light went off. I saw myself in the position of my clients, the fear, the trepidation and self doubt, then I noticed the pride, the moment where I said okay, I don't look how I used to but thats okay. I felt that switch in how I saw myself and how I thought others saw me. I realized I didn't need the approval of others to accept myself, and no amount of compliments can make me feel great about myself.

I get it now, I see your fears, your doubts, I have walked in your shoes. If you feel, for any reason, that you aren't ready to get your photo taken, I would like to challenge you to book a session RIGHT NOW. Face those fears and insecurities head on and see how BEAUTIFUL you are RIGHT NOW, with that extra couple of pounds, bad hair cut, or any other reason you could possibly think of that would make you feel that you aren't good enough as you are. You are beautiful and I can show you.

Washington DC Photographer| Mothers Day

In honor of Mothers day, this is my beautiful mother, Nicole.

I have put my mom through a lot in my life time, and I don't do as much as I should to show my appreciation for everything she does for me, but I know i'm not the only one. I am not a mom, so I cant imagine the sacrifices, the long days, the aggravation and the bliss that comes with the job. It was so important that I give my mom a photoshoot to show her the version of her that I see when I look at her because my whole life, I was the first priority, and her happiness took a back seat. I know she would never ask me, her daughter for a photoshoot. She, like many of you was perfectly content with her iPhone photos, but this experience is so much more than just a photo shoot, this is a celebration. My mom couldn't remember the last time she got her hair and makeup done, was made up like a queen and had someone taking care of her needs. It was such a pleasure for me, to give my mom that moment, of feeling as important as she is to not only myself, but my whole family.  The result of that experience is amazing photos, that capture not only her beauty, but her soul. In these photos, I see not only my mom, who was there for me when I was too sick to go to school, taught me how to drive, and who grounded me when I stayed out too late, but a strong, confident woman (who looks way too young to have a child my age).

It is so important to take time out to show someone especially your mother, how much you care about them. Book a photoshoot today, for mothers day, or any day, to show her how much she means to you, and preserve this moment in photograph.

Washington DC Portrait Photography | Brooke

This beauty is Brooke. She is a brand new mom and a dancer and a goddess.

Brooke told me during our dream photoshoot design session that she wanted to have an experience that would restore her confidence after recently having a baby. We planned out the perfect wardrobe, to showcase her amazing figure, talked about how she wanted her hair and what kind of makeup would be best for each look. Brooke wanted a variety of looks ranging from Calvin Klein inspired black and whites red carpet glam.

I love to incorporate diverse looks into each photoshoot, I encourage all of my clients to bring a variety of outfits ranging from business to red carpet to lingerie, that way you make the most of your shoot. For more information on how to dress to flatter your body shape, or for a personalized wardrobe and photoshoot design session call me today.

Rachel's dream photoshoot

Rachel's dream photoshoot

Rachel is 30, a teacher, full time student and a goddess.

She told me about how hard she is working in school, and all about her new career as an elementary school teacher. She also told me how long she had been dreaming of doing SOMETHING that would spoil her for a day. Something that would make her feel like a celebrity. She just didn't know what that something would be, until she met me.

When I met with Rachel for her photo shoot design session. we discussed how she wanted to be photographed. How she wanted to look, how she wanted to feel, hair, makeup and wardrobe. She wanted to look like a model in a fashion magazine, she also wanted softer looks. We discussed every detail for the shoot and it couldn't have turned out better.

When Rachel arrived for her session, she went right into hair and makeup for a supermodel transformation.  She brought outfits for all of the looks we discussed and more.

Rachel's was glowing after her session and was thrilled with her new portraits. She will have those portraits for the rest of her life. A reminder of how beautiful and strong she is.

Washington DC Portrait Photographer| Wendi and Tammy Behind the scenes

When I photograph women, I get to see them in their rawest form. I hear about their stories and watch them apologize for their insecurities. Some times they criticize themselves so harshly. A lot of us are like that.

My job is to weed through those insecurities, apologies, and uncomfortable feelings and get to the core. It can be so hard for some women to let go of their guard and be vulnerable. But when they do, and give themselves permission to be beautiful, even for a moment. Magic happens.

I am going to start filming my sessions, to show the stories of the women who I meet and how they transform.  The transformations I see are so much deeper than the beautiful hair and makeup the girls wear for a day, they change how they see themselves. They become more forgiving with themselves, and that critical voice in their head changes.

I love telling these stories and meeting these women. I hope you enjoy a clip of Tami and Wendi's portrait session and I look forward to making more videos and meeting more incredible women. Call today to book your session, experience this transformation for yourself. 202-643-3714.
